Small Animal Fostering and Rescue

Rabbits

Rescue Centres are full of animals waiting for good homes. If you're looking for a pet you should always check out your local Rescue Centre first, see Rescue Links they may be able to provide you with an animal that suits your lifestyle and will always give impartial advice.

On arrival at the rescue, every animal is given a health check and any necessary treatment. All animals are monitored for a minimum of 2 weeks to ensure they are fit and healthy, and to assess their temperament, prior to being put up for adoption.
All rabbits are wormed, vaccinated and neutered prior to being rehomed.

RABBITS

The average life span of a Rabbit is 8-12 years

Rabbits like to live in pairs made up of a neutered male bonded with a spayed female.

Contrary to popular belief RABBITS DO NOT MAKE SUITABLE PETS FOR YOUNG CHILDREN
Most rabbits DO NOT like being picked up or cuddled by children and they may retalliate by kicking, scratching or even biting.
Please buy your child an interactive soft toy instead as it won't mind or come to harm when the novelty has worn off!

PLEASE.............Before you do anything else spare a few minutes to go to this link and watch the inspiring film with soundtrack http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4z_Mrg-lpc then take it into consideration when choosing your rabbits accommodation - all rabbits, regardless of size, need lots of space !

Providing a home for one or more rabbits isn't cheap and is a big commitment - they will require regular vaccination (against Myxomatosis and Viral Haemhoragic Disease) as well as worming and health checks with costs involved similar to that of owning a small dog or cat.

You will have to be very observant and quick to spot signs that your rabbit is unwell, as they hide illness extraordinarily well.
FLYSTRIKE - is a common cause of death in the summer months when flies lay their eggs in a rabbits fur (usually around the bottom area). You will need to check your rabbit at least twice a day as the eggs can hatch within hours and the rabbit is literally eaten alive unless you seek immediate help from your vet. It is extremely important that your rabbit is given reliable flystrike protection following the manufacturers guidelines carefully.
HEATSTROKE - exhaustion and death can occur if your rabbit doesn't have adequate shade and air circulation. Hutch covers are great for insulating in winter but in summer hutches can become ovens. Never leave your rabbit shut inside a hot hutch or enclosure, they should be allowed freedom to chose where to lay in a secure attached run that has plenty of shade.

The most important part of a rabbits diet is hay - this should be made available at all times in unlimited quantity, along with fresh leafy green vegetables and a handful of good quality rabbit nuggets, which will help provide them with the essential vitamins and nutrients they need.

Water bottles or bowls should be cleaned and refilled daily, using a bottle brush.
Housing should be spot cleaned daily, paying particular attention to litter trays or areas where your rabbits urinate.
Carry out a thorough clean once a week with a pet safe disinfectant.

Wooden toys, bridges, hides, paper bags and cardboard boxes stuffed with hay and nibbles will help provide interest as your rabbit will love exploring, chewing and foraging for treats (healthy ones please that don't contain sugar).

All rabbits require a spacious enclosure with a secure large attached run for exercise constructed using fox resistant wire (weldmesh not chicken wire). All openings should be secured with barrel bolts (not swivel latches).

THE MINIMUM FLOOR AREA FOR A PAIR OF RABBITS SHOULD BE 60 sq.ft. AS RECOMMENDED BY THE RWAF
Hutches/enclosures should be sited in a sheltered area near your house.

We will rehome to suitably converted sheds, aviaries, playhouses and dog kennel and run combinations, as well as suitably "bunny proofed" homes who wish to accommodate house rabbits

See Rabbit Welfare Association - Outdoor Housing and Rabbit Welfare Association - Indoor Housing for information and guidance.

We will only rehome rabbits to live in pairs.
We will not rehome a single bunny unless you already have one to bond and the bonding must be carried out on neutral territory supervised by ourselves here at the rescue.
Rabbits should not be housed with other species - we will not rehome a rabbit to live with guinea pigs, birds or other fowl.
We will not rehome rabbits to free range unsupervised.

If you are going to keep a House Bunny - Bunny proofing and special care needs to be given to ensure there are no electrical cables present in their exercise room as they like to chew everything!

We have a number of Rabbits staying with us long-term because they cannot be re-homed due to old age or they have special requirements. We do not give up on animals just because they have problems - we provide them with the long term care they need.
If you would like to sponsor a Rabbit find out more.
